一、課程目標 Course objectives:
This semester will build on skills developed in the first semester, covering advanced grammatical constructions such as relative clauses, comparative construction, and passive voice, then moving on to paragraph level translation, focusing on "long distance" phenomena such as anaphora, tense, and number. The goal of the class is to provide students with the fundamental skills required to produce general translations (non-technical, non-literary) from English to Chinese of a professional quality, and to prepare them for advanced translation courses offered in the senior year.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The course may include extra practice and lectures on computer skills if the instructor deems it necessary.

三、授課方式 Teaching approach:
Discussion, lectures: This is a homework based course. There will be 12 homework assignments for the semester. Class time will be spent primarily on discussion of recent homework, and lectures preparing for future homework.

Homework: All assignments must be done using the school's Moodle system; no credit will be given for work turned in by hand, or sent by e-mail, unless specifically requested by the instructor.  Assignment deadlines will be posted on line and no work will be accepted after the due date/time.

In class exercises: There will be no mid-term or final examinations; instead, there will be two in class translation exercises. Each of these in class exercises will count as two regular assignments. Students are allowed to bring one print dictionary for all in class exercises. Electronic dictionaries are not allowed.

In class/on line participation: Students are expected to attend class! Participation in class discussion is highly valued. To develop habits of independent reading and critical thinking, the class web-page will include an online forum for students questions and comments on translation issues discussed in class. Participation in the forum is mandatory and worth 10% of the class grade.

Homework -- 70% 
In class translations -- 20%
Discussion and forum participation -- 10%
