文學寫作:詩 Creative Writing: Poetry

一、課程目標Course objectives:
For many people, poetry is a dead form of art. It is at best beautiful words printed on pages, at least inactive and thus boring when hard to relate. This writing course is designed to challenge that note and intends to bring student writers’ voices into the art. In other words, poetry is supposed to be loud, powerful, and rebellious.
In the beginning of the course, an array of poetry on the stage—not on the page—is introduced, whereas pages of handouts are still used for our eyes to read. Examples include spoken word poetry, poetry slam, movies about poetry, and hip-hop/rap music. Then, the students have a chance to discuss the types of poetry they enjoy by bringing them to the class. The instruction sheet of a term paper assignment is given at this point (due on the final week). What follows is haiku, a simplistic form of Japanese poetry, which serves as a warm-up for the students to begin to write original poems. Writing workshops will be held in class for the student writers to recite their poems, hear their partners’ works, and exchange ideas for revising. By the end of the course, the student writers will “slam” their poems on stage, completing the requirements of the course.
I respect all the student writers and value their writings a lot. Therefore, I am also planning to collect all their poems and term papers and compile an anthology of student writings. We will discuss the anthology plan further in class.
