Contemporary French Drama (undergraduate)

Office hours: Monday 16:10~18:10 at 人415 (by appt)

課程介紹:
The purpose of this class is to introduce to students some major French plays of the twentieth century and the philosophical thinking of the century from which modern French drama is derived. The plays we will read were mostly written during or after World War II. The series of political events that occurred in this period shook in many ways the intellectual conscience of the French. During the years of the Occupation, for instance, two opposing literary worlds coexisted, each increasingly closed to the other. The predominant attitude in books written at this time was of a strengthened feeling among French intellectuals concerning the continuity of French culture and its humanistic, universal, exemplary values. Subjects that will be discussed in class as methods for interpreting and analyzing the texts include existentialism and notions of the absurd.

授課方式:
Students are expected to read completely the works according to course schedule. The class will be conducted through examination of the text(s) and analysis thereof in class during which students are expected to demonstrate familiarity with the entire text under discussion.
