一、課程目標Course objectives:

三、授課方式Teaching approach:
This semester begins with an introduction to the major syntactic and lexical differences between Chinese and English. Strategies for handling these are discussed and extensive practice is provided in dictionary skills, contextual analysis, and translating single sentences presenting a variety of problems. Representative student work is analyzed and corrected in-class, and basic translating resources are introduced, particularly the standard dictionaries (both monolingual and multilingual), and their advantages and disadvantages. If time permits, the course will also introduce some basic computer techniques and programs for translation. Following the mid-term, assignments will change to paragraph length excerpts from a number of sources. The primary focus will be on the idea of linguistic register and levels of fidelity. The class will also begin to work on methods of identifying key vocabulary and concepts, and developing a consistent style to handle these.

Requirements
All assignments must be put in the course database using the assignment program; no credit will be given for work handed in as typewritten or hand-written documents, or for work sent by e-mail, unless specifically requested by the instructor. Assignment deadlines will be posted on line and the course program will not allow students to turn in work after midnight of the due date. Students are allowed to bring one print dictionary for all in class exercises. Electronic dictionaries are not allowed.

四、評量方式Grading criteria:
Grading
There will be at least ten on-line assignments during the class. There will be no mid-term or final examinations; instead, there will be two in class translation exercises during the regular exam times. Each of these in class exercises will count as two regular assignments.
