Course Objectives
This is an introductory course in articulatory phonetics designed mainly for first-year undergraduate students majoring in English. Both the theoretical and the practical aspects of phonetics will be emphasized in the course. Regarding theoretical issues, the focus will be placed on instructing basic concepts and technical terms required for understanding and describing speech, on introducing speech mechanism, on presenting how speech sounds (i.e., vowels and consonants) are articulated, classified and transcribed, and finally on discussing prosodic, or supra-segmental, features of speech (i.e., stress, rhythm, and intonation, etc.). At the practical level, the main focus will be the introduction to the sounds of American English and the special features of American English phonetics, such as supra-segmental patterns, segmental sound modification, syllable structure and phonotactic rules, and letter-sound relationship.
